Those who have visited Palau often say, “Once you return from Palau, you won’t look at the sea the same way again.” Having lived in Palau for a year and a half, I deeply understand the profound meaning behind this statement. The beauty of Palau lies not in its vastness but in its tranquil waters that resemble a paradise untouched by time. The marine life here is rich and diverse, with tropical scenery that captivates the senses; the refreshing sea breeze enhances the unique local culture and customs. The extraordinary diving spots make it an irresistible destination for visitors from around the world.
The waters surrounding Palau serve as a natural fishing ground, ensuring that residents never need to worry about hunger. The variety of fish is abundant and remarkably easy to catch—almost like they are “foolish,” showing no fear when encountering humans. A simple scattering of breadcrumbs into the water will attract schools of fish swarming around you to snatch up their meal.
The fish in Palauan waters are vibrant and varied. While swimming, donning my snorkeling mask allows me to clearly observe these creatures gliding gracefully nearby. Magnified through my mask, they swim freely in groups; sometimes brushing against me or darting away like gusts of wind before vanishing without a trace.
On weekends, locals enjoy taking speedboats to secluded areas resembling serene mountain canyons for fishing excursions. On several occasions while aboard such boats venturing into these island-filled gorges, I observed Palauan fishermen either relaxing on their vessels or standing atop coral reefs jutting out above water as they leisurely fished—not out of necessity but purely for enjoyment.
The experience of deep-sea fishing in Palau offers not only an intimate connection with nature but also serves as an opportunity for mental relaxation and enjoyment. Here one can feel both the vastness and mystery of the ocean while experiencing both the joy and challenge inherent in fishing—all while embracing the laid-back lifestyle characteristic of those who call Palau home.
